How to Find Yourself: 3 Ways to Come Back to Self

What does it mean to find yourself, or to ‘come back to self’? Over the course of our lives, we engage in a series of thoughts, emotions and behaviors. When those three elements no longer align, we naturally start to question our identities and perhaps, even our existence.

Who am I? Why am I here? Am I living out my purpose? Do I even have one?

These are some of the questions that often come to mind when you are on the journey back to self. To come back to self is to stop living in the past, be radically honest about the present, and take heart-centered action in the future

Coming back into alignment can seem like an overwhelming task, especially after a traumatic event that destabilizes your sense of self. But, there are some practical ways you can start finding yourself again.

Cultivate Authenticity in Your Routines

You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘you are what you eat.’ It insinuates that the food you consume has a bearing on your health and your state of mind. In a similar way, the routines you participate in have a bearing on your state of self

It’s hard to perceive yourself as fit, if you never workout. You can’t say you’re family-oriented if you rarely spend time with loved ones. The truth of who you are is revealed through the actions you take on a regular basis.

Luckily, you have the power to choose which actions and routines you participate in. If you don’t feel like your actions represent your true self, it’s time to shift your behaviors.

One of the best ways to find yourself again is to cultivate authenticity in your routines. Whether you’re intentional about them or not, you participate in certain routines everyday. 

You wake up at a certain time. You get ready for work in a certain way. You eat certain meals for lunch. You go about your day in a particular manner. If you feel lost, it’s likely that your daily routines are not authentic to who you truly are!


It’s vital that you reconnect your routines to your authentic self. Make a list of the routines that feel right to you and develop a plan to start implementing them. By doing so, you’ll enter into alignment and achieve the fulfilling life you were brought here to accomplish.

Practice Making Heart Guided Decisions

It can be difficult to identify what actions need to be taken in your life if you are disconnected from your intuition. Your intuition speaks to you through your heart. 

Operating from your heart, as opposed to operating from your head, can be scary for some people. There’s a misconception that if you listen to your heart you are driven strictly by your emotions. That’s not necessarily the case.


While your emotions can inform your decisions, they don’t need to control them. Your heart has a deep knowledge not available to your mind. Messages from your heart are the Universe’s gift to you. They are there to guide you.

In order to find yourself, it’s important you tap into your heart-centered knowledge. Being able to listen to your heart will free you from the burden of making decisions based on others’ opinions. 

The voice of your heart speaks low, but with might. The more you listen the louder she will become.

Activate a Power Conscious Mentality

Lastly, coming back to yourself will require you to reclaim your personal power. We’re all born with a special ball of light, wisdom, love, pure magic—don’t let any other person take that away from you, from here on out. 

The problem is, we are not always aware of that power. Even if we are aware of it, we don’t always know how to wield it. Activating a power conscious mentality starts with knowing you are powerful, and your personal power is accessed through discipline.

Self love, in truth, is self mastery. All the self help books in the world can’t help you if you refuse to act upon the advice they give. Once you’ve established self awareness, you’re able to take accountability. But, it’s the discipline you implement that will take you from point A to point B.

As you progress in your journey back to self, you’ll start to internalize your personal power and understand the true meaning of self love. To know yourself is to love yourself.
